I Can't Hear Anything in Here! - Sound Absorption

Sound Absorption and Soundproofing: What's the Difference?

Sound is like water. It doesn't have a shape or form, but molds itself to its surroundings. And like water, sound can be absorbed by some materials and contained by others. Click here to learn more sound basics.

Soundproofing products trap sound. They contain the sound within a space, making it impossible for the sound to move to other parts of the building. They also stop unwanted sound from entering the room. Click here to learn more soundproofing basics.

On the other hand, sound absorption products soak up sound. They absorb sound waves and prevent them from bouncing off the walls. They improve the quality of the sound within the area.

How Do I Know which Type of Soundproofing I Need?

Here's an easy 2-step process to determine which you need:

Step 1: Identify WHAT noise you hear.

Is it someone's voice? It is the TV? Is it the traffic outside your window?

Step 2: Identify WHERE the noise is coming from.

Is the noise coming from inside the same space as you, or is it coming from a separate room? For instance, is it the voice of someone on the phone in the office across the hall? Are the echoes in the room bothering you? If there's a construction element, such as a wall, that separates you from the noise, then it's not in the same space as you.

Soundproofing products stop sound from entering or exiting your space.

Sound absorption products help control the noise that's in the same space as you and improve the sound quality of that space.

How Do Sound Absorption Products Improve Sound Quality?

Sound absorbers soak up sound energy within an area to reduce background noise.

Sound waves bounce off hard surfaces and back into the room. Sound absorbers work by soaking up these unwanted sound waves. Echoes are eliminated and sound quality is improved.

If you're in a noisy call center or a gymnasium where the crowd can't hear the announcer, you need sound absorbers. If you have a home theater and want to take full advantage of the powerful sound system, you need sound absorbers.

The goal is to control the sound energy in a problem area, not to stop noise transfer to another space.

While sound blockers are massy, dense, and hard, sound absorbers are light, porous, and soft. They are designed to be installed in visible areas, not behind walls or under flooring. Because they're visible, we offer them in a variety of colors and styles to match any décor.

What's NRC?

To be able to compare the performance of different sound absorption products, we rate them by how much sound they can soak up. This rating is called NRC, which stands for Noise Reduction Coefficient. Click here to learn more out NRC.

Generally, the higher the NRC rating, the better the product is at absorbing sounds.
