How to Soundproof a Mobile Home

How to Soundproof a Mobile Home
May 06, 2022

A mobile home is a practical housing option that’s growing in popularity. If you’ve recently moved into a mobile home or are considering it, you should know that the structures have thinner walls that sound can penetrate easily. Soundproofing can ensure you have enough peace and privacy inside your mobile home.

3 Ways to Soundproof your Mobile Home

Soundproofing can address numerous types of noise around your mobile home. Here are three ways you can stop sound from getting in or out.

1. Add Density to Your Walls

Your mobile home’s walls are a relatively small barrier between the inside and outside, so sounds can make their way through with ease. Adding density creates more mass for the sound waves to work through, reducing the transmitted noise. You can add mass in walls in two places:

  • Between the walls: You can insulate a mobile home with soundproofing insulation between any interior or exterior wall to minimize transition. The insulation will retain heat, too.
  • On the interior surface: Covering a wall with mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) will, as the name suggests, add mass that prevents transmission. Acoustic foam panels serve a similar purpose while also absorbing sound.

2. Soften Any Hard Surfaces

Sound will reflect off a mobile home’s bare walls, floors and ceiling, resulting in distracting echoes and reverberations. Softer materials can absorb sound for a quieter interior setting. Here are a few of your options:

  • Acoustic panels: As mentioned above, acoustic panels are great for absorbing sound. You can even find art acoustic panels with a design of your choice.
  • Soundproofing foam: These soft foam sheets absorb what they can and disperse the rest off of their irregular surfaces.
  • Flooring underlayment: Install flooring underlayment under your carpets to reduce vibrations and experience some absorptive benefit.

3. Fill Any Cracks

Sound can get in and out through the cracks around your door. Fortunately, you can line your entryways with door soundproofing products with silicone to limit noise transmission. Door sweeps install underneath your door, while perimeter seals go around the sides and top.

If you have cracks in your walls or other spaces where surfaces connect, your best solution is to fill the cracks with acoustic sound sealant.
